Day One on the Road

VW enthusiasts gathered at the VW dealership in Santa Monica, CA. this morning and gave the touring ghias and Herbie a nice send off.

They headed up the I-10 through Los Angeles to the I-15 in Ontario and up Cajon Pass (over 4200 feet). At Barstow, CA Hot Dog Fred was waiting with brats and dogs for lunch. From Barstow, the caravan continued on I-40.

A few minor incidents today have not deterred the adventurers. Rachel thought she might have to quit when Jeb, her 57 single cab, started acting funny but an empty fuel tank was the only problem . (She had filled up 40 miles back but was shorted on her 9.2 gallons.)

At 5 pm Larry was broken down west of Needles, CA. We were able to contact Ronnie from Lake Havasu City, AZ who had the parts. Brent headed out to get the parts. We caught up with Larry at exit 9 in Arizona. At this point he was awaiting a second tow, Brent was MIA for 5 hours, and Ronnie had left the parts out. We headed down to Havasu and found the parts had been picked up. By the time we got back to Exit 9, Brent was waiting for us and Larry was already being towed to Kingman, AZ, the first scheduled night stop.

Folks are burning the midnight oil (easy to do when you start at 11:30) and Larry should be back with us tomorrow.

All of the adventurers are safe in Kingman, resting up for tomorrow.
